In “Burning Questions for Design Masters”, Crazy Rich Asians production designer Nelson Coates, innovator Daan Roosegaarde, design strategist Harry West, celebrated designer Patricia Urquiola and former IKEA Head of Design Marcus Engman give candid answers to a range of questions collated by the DesignSingapore Council.
Drawing from their experience, they share the key qualities that designers must have. These range from curiosity, to the ability to see details, as well as being able to communicate and “talk the business talk”.
Most intriguing are their biggest screw ups – West’s confession of how his good idea floundered serves as a cautionary tale for young designers eager to put their products onto the market. Engman reveals that his monumental flop became one of the biggest mistakes in IKEA’s history. To find out what fizzled out so badly, go to the 1.42 mark.
The designers featured had spoken at Brainstorm Design 2019, which was part of the annual Singapore Design Week. Check out Nelson Coates’ experience of working on Crazy Rich Asians here. And how Daan Roosegaarde intends to create art from space junk.
