i Light Singapore returns from 5 to 28 June 2026, transforming Marina Bay and Raffles Place into an open-air gallery of sustainable light art.

This year’s theme, Movement, invites visitors to consider how small, everyday actions can ripple outward to create meaningful change. Across 14 installations by 17 artists from Singapore, Asia and beyond, the festival turns gestures as simple as a tap, a step or a wave into captivating experiences of light, colour and sound.

i Light Future
The DesignSingapore Council is proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of i Light Future — a new mentorship programme designed to discover, nurture and showcase emerging creative talent in Singapore. In line with the upcoming Design 2035 Masterplan, i Light Future provides a platform for the next generation of designers to develop large-scale public installations under expert guidance.

For this inaugural edition, two installations by emerging designers have been developed under the mentorship of A&C Atelier:

Market Cycles by Ng Choon Wee and Tan Mei Yee

Plastic crates moving daily between suppliers and vendors in wet markets are assembled into an architectural enclosure. Their perforated sides, designed originally for ventilation, are reconfigured to let light pass through, producing layers of colour, texture and pattern.

Market Cycles brings into focus what typically goes unnoticed. These crates are built for movement, yet they fade into the background of everyday commerce. Temporarily borrowed from their ‘working lives’ and later returned to their distribution networks, the installation invites a shift in perception: What if everyday objects received the same attention as art? What might change if the mundane reuse, adaptation and continuity of such objects became the centre of our focus?

At its core, Market Cycles echoes the DesignSingapore Council’s Design 2035 Masterplan’s call for responsible resource use, that design has the power to transform how we see and relate to the material environment.

Market Cycles is located at Mist Walk.

Steps By Nawal Bte Azhar

Illuminated frames form unpredictable staircases, intersecting at impossible angles, turning corners, meeting mid-air. From one angle, the steps appear to compress tightly. From another, they expand. Spacing shifts through perspective. Boundaries and geometry change as you move.

Steps interprets Singapore’s evolution through spatial relationships — tight intervals evoking early constraints of nation building, expanded ones suggesting contemporary openness. The structure seems to defy logic yet exists as a tangible form. Singapore’s trajectory from survival to global city followed similarly unexpected paths: not impossible, but improbable in its speed.

Understanding it depends on where you stand. The same nation looks different from the perspective of each generation. Progress follows no predictable path — like this installation, it changes shape as you move around it, akin to the spirit of the DesignSingapore Council’s Design 2035 Masterplan, where design continuously reimagines what could be.

Steps is sponsored by Aedas and located the Waterfront Promenade along Marina Boulevard.

Urban Redevelopment Authority

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) is Singapore’s land use planning and conservation agency. Our mission is “to make Singapore a great city to live, work and play”. We strive to create an endearing home and a vibrant city through long-term planning and innovation, in partnership with the community.

We have transformed Singapore into one of the most liveable cities in Asia through judicious land use planning and good urban design. Adopting a long-term and comprehensive planning approach, we formulate strategic plans such as the Long-Term Plan and the Master Plan to guide the physical development of Singapore in a sustainable manner. Developed to support economic growth, our plans and policies are focused on achieving a quality living environment for Singapore.

We take on a multi-faceted role to turn plans and visions into reality. As the main government land sales agent, we facilitate the development of sites that support planning, economic and social objectives. Through our regulatory function, we ensure that development works are aligned with our plans. As the conservation authority, we have an internationally recognised conservation programme, and have successfully conserved not just single buildings, but entire districts. We also partner the community to enliven our public spaces to create a car-lite, people-friendly and liveable city for all to enjoy.

In shaping a distinctive city, we promote architecture and urban design excellence, and innovate to build a resilient city of opportunity that fulfils the aspirations of our people.
