New Optimistic Works focuses on original contemporary design with distinct personality, for a worthwhile and aesthetic way of living.
The first exhibition of New Optimistic Works presents CASE STUDY: DESIGN & MADE IN SINGAPORE, the alchemy of dialogues, experimentations, and ideas.
This exhibition showcases a collection of objects that explores possibilities and experiments with manufacturing capabilities in Singapore. Working with familiar materials, and transforming them with new ideas, this project adopts a hands-on research process – made possible only by the many insightful conversations and working sessions with the makers and designers in a tight ecosystem.
This project works with Singapore designers and artists Tiffany Loy, Hans Tan, Nathan Yong, Forest & Whale, Kim Choy and Studio Juju. And made in Singapore by makers and manufacturers: Mud Rock Ceramics, Shibui Furniture Collective, Baremetalco., Wah Chye Engineering Work, Chop Wah Hin Sheet Metal Works, A Thing of Sense and Synergraphic Design.
New Optimistic Works is a design label creatively directed by Studio Juju.
About Good Design Research
Launched in March 2020 in the middle of a pandemic year, Good Design Research (GDR) underscores the importance of how design backed by deep research can make a true difference by building deep domain knowledge and solving the challenges faced by societies and cities. This initiative empowers designers and design enterprises in Singapore to find their unique value proposition in designing for impact through research and experimentation, supported by a wide network of knowledge partners.
Studio Juju designs with fresh perspectives and emotional connection in mind, with thoughtful consideration of human experiences in contemporary living. Each project is a union of simplicity and warmth, utility and whimsy, refinement, and relevance. Studio Juju has been honored with the ‘Designers of the Future’ award by Design Miami/ Basel in 2011, based on a body of work that demonstrates originality in the creative process, a high level of refinement in the finished pieces, and for its noteworthy contribution to contemporary design discourse.
In 2014, their work ‘Rabbit & the Tortoise Collection’ for Living Divani was awarded the Singapore President’s Design of the Year for offering a fresh, alternative perspective and demonstrating delicate design sensibility. Studio Juju is a Singapore-based design office founded in 2009 by Timo Wong and Priscilla Lui. The studio works across various fields from industrial design, spatial design and art intervention.
