DesignSingapore scholar Ms Lim Si Ping, 27, will pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Design and Technology at Parsons The New School for Design. Here, she speaks about an exhibition project that expresses her belief: the power of empathy and design to forge social change.
What was the project you were proudest to share with the selection panel of the DesignSingapore Scholarship?
After graduating from LASALLE College of the Arts, I had the great opportunity to collaborate with Tribal DDB Singapore on our first exhibition. “A VOID Experience” (see below) examined the asocial attitude of HDB residents, the absence of communication between neighbours who brush past each other at void decks, in the lifts and along corridors. The exhibition was brought to the void deck of an HDB block in the heartland. It opened up conversations about what separated neighbours, the void they felt; and through the conversations, united the residents.
When your contemporaries at Parsons The New School for Design ask you, what would you say is representative of Singaporean design?
Our Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network. It is efficient and shows the importance of design.
How do you intend to contribute to Singaporean design?
Through a hands-on approach and by tapping into inventions.
