How do we prepare our children for a world that’s constantly evolving? At the Design Education Summit (DEST) 2018, Prof. Pieter Jan Stappers of the Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands shares how design skills can be taught and what teachers can expect.
At the Design Education Summit 2018, educators and participants from the design and non-design sectors met to develop strategies to meet new demands of design education and how to introduce design in schools. Professor Pieter Jan Stappers was one of the speakers and he shared how teachers can teach design in the classroom with these 7 design lessons:
- Explore, don’t repeat
- Have an equal emphasis on Process and Product
- Understand that the outcome is not pre-defined
- Understand that creativity does not equate expressiveness
- Remember to empathise and evaluate what you have made
- Make something tangible, not abstract
- Teamwork is important
Prof Stappers stressed that critical thinking, creativity, and learning from mistakes were now some of the most sought-after qualities. This was why he felt that infusing design in education could equip students with skills for the 21st century and beyond.
The Design Education Summit was presented by DesignSingapore Council and organised in partnership with the SUTD-MIT International Design Centre (IDC) based at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).
