About the Speakers
- Nathan Yong, Co-Founder/Design Director of Grafunkt, Founder/Designer of Nathan Yong Design
Nathan Yong runs a multidisciplinary design consultancy practice based in Singapore. His work spans industrial design, graphics, interior design, architectural design, strategic planning in product development, manufacturing process and branding. Nathan is inspired by observation of the visual environment, and challenging the existential questions of objects. Instead of superfluous details, he captures the poetry of products through a stripping process, lending object qualities that are informed by a lightness of restraints.
Nathan’s work has been exhibited globally in design centers in Singapore, Shizuoka, Milan, London, Koln, and Taipei, and has appeared in international magazines like Wallpaper, Monocle, Surface, Dwell, On Office and Habitus. His clients include Design Within Reach (USA), Herman Miller (USA), Ligne Roset (France), Living Divani (Italy), Opinion Ciatti (Italy), Sphaus (Italy), Domicil (Germany), Ethnicraft (Belgium), Mige (China), Grafunkt (Singapore) and Folks Furniture (Singapore) amongst many others. He is also a programme leader at LASALLE College of the Arts and an active mentor for many young creative startups in Asia.
- Gin Lee, Co-Founder/Designer of GINLEE Studio
Founded in 2011 by designers Gin Lee and Tamir Niv, GINLEE Studio is a contemporary womenswear label that prides itself on creating beautiful, thoughtfully designed pieces that are mainstays in one’s wardrobe. Its wearable pieces of art combine aesthetically pleasing elements with functional silhouettes, creating womenswear that is at once sharp and stylish yet fluid and comfortable.
With her extensive experience working in the fashion industry, Gin realised the need for brands to conduct more sustainable practices; a belief that has become an essential part of GINLEE Studio’s identity. After studying womenswear design in London, Gin went on to work there for two years before moving to Shanghai. It was there she met her husband and business partner, Tamir Niv. In 2010 they moved to his home country Israel, and a year later, GINLEE Studio was founded. It was in 2014 that they brought the brand to Singapore before permanently moving back in 2020.
- Larry Peh, Founder/Creative Director of &Larry
Recipient of the President*s Design Award in 2014 and 2016, Larry Peh is the founder of &Larry, an independent branding and design studio. Since 2005, he has produced a body of work that exemplifies the spirit of collaboration, resulting in innovative experiences and stronger connections between people and brands while respecting business needs.
Codifying the studio’s creative process under the Soul Purpose™ methodology, Larry is a staunch advocate for bringing out the true essence of a brand. He believes in leaving his mark not through his creations, but by the good that they deliver.
About Studio SML
Studio SML is a portal that hopes to archive in depth stories of designers and their journeys. The vision is to create a comprehensive archive of mini biographies of all the creatives in Singapore. Categorised by studio size – small (S) for 1-man show to small teams of up to 15 people, medium (M) for 16 – 30 people, and large (L) for teams of above 30 people – the interviews will focus on content, and less on visual. Featuring both upcoming, young designers and established veterans, Studio SML seeks to archive as many stories of designers as possible from Singapore, and subsequently Asia.
