The Good Design Research showcase continues with an exhibition by STUCK.
Loneliness and social isolation are common problems that lead to a negative aging experience. In Singapore, we are beginning to find more living options, such as assisted living, for seniors to age in a more connected community setting. Such living options are unique in its arrangement, where seniors turn from strangers to housemates or close neighbours, and live together in a facilitated environment to cater for their health and wellness needs.
Design can be an important voice to contribute to this discussion of senior living options in Singapore. In this project, STUCK looks into the experience of aging in assisted living communities and designs to promote social connectedness amongst seniors while maintaining personal choice and autonomy.
Home elements are designed to offer options for seniors to open up and connect within their own comfort zones. By reframing the idea of “helping the elderly” to “designing for choices”, STUCK demonstrates how design can intervene to create living environments that allow personal choices for seniors to decide how they wish to interact or connect with others, according to their personal preferences and evolving needs.
About Good Design Research
Launched in March 2020 in the middle of a pandemic year, Good Design Research (GDR) underscores the importance of how design backed by deep research can make a true difference by building deep domain knowledge and solving the challenges faced by societies and cities. This initiative empowers designers and design enterprises in Singapore to find their unique value proposition in designing for impact through research and experimentation, supported by a wide network of knowledge partners.
