This workshop is recommended for families with children aged 4 to 9. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Traditional crafts are part of Singapore’s intangible cultural heritage (ICH), and local craft practitioners have long been using intricate techniques to create objects of rich functional, aesthetic, and socio-cultural significance.

Led by ketupat weaver Anita Tompang and designer Andrew Loh, join the workshop to explore the cultural heritage and design possibilities behind the traditional craft of ketupat weaving.

The workshop will also include an interactive and hands-on session for children to experience the joy of craft-making – with ketupat weaving demonstrations, as well as simple weaving activities using paper strips to make and assemble their own woven objects to take home.

This workshop is part of the National Heritage Board’s inaugural Craft X Design programme, which seeks to explore the intersections between craft, culture, heritage, and design.

About the trainers:

Anita Tompang

Anita Tompang started learning ketupat weaving at the age of 9, and now has nearly 50 years of experience with it. She had been featured in Berita Harian and other local media for her commitment to this tradition, having woven ketupat by hand every Hari Raya for over 20 years; and she has been actively promoting and passing on this traditional craft in Singapore.

Andrew Loh

With more than 20 years of experience, Andrew Loh’s design sensibilities have been finely honed over his career spanning both User Experience and Product Design. He has worked locally and internationally to create a variety of design solutions across multiple industries and fields, including consumer electronics, household appliances, sports equipment, and design education.

Presented by National Heritage Board. Supported by the DesignSingapore Council and the National Design Centre.

This workshop is part of the Craft X Design showcase at the National Design Centre, Pop-up Gallery, Level 1, running till 2 April 2023. Find out more about the showcase here.
