Modern Singapore has grown from a garden vision. What is our garden dream for the future?

Vegetation has always been strategic in urbanised Singapore. The manicured ‘Garden City’ vision has brought us cooler streets, created an impressive national image, and contributed to our economic story. As we evolve toward NParks’ new vision of a ‘City in Nature’, we find ourselves on the cusp of incredible potential. A more naturalised – yet strategically managed – high-performance green environment can bring us greater resilience in many ways. But are we collectively ready to live closer to nature and its messier complexity?

Hear design perspectives from some of the figures behind leading-edge projects and research: Leonard Ng (Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl), Schirin Taraz-Breinholt (WOHA), Yun Hye Hwang (National University of Singapore) and Goh Yu Han (Salad Dressing). They have robust visions for Singapore’s landscaped future. Do you share their garden dreams?

Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl x Jurong Lake Gardens
Hear Leonard Ng, Country Marketing Director, Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl, which worked on the Lakeside Garden at Jurong Lake Gardens discuss the mission to bring old ecologies into industrialised areas.

WOHA X PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering
Cosy up with Schirin Taraz-Breinholt, Director (COO), WOHA, the firm behind PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering as she shares more about integrating landscape and architecture, and how development in the city can intensify greenery.

Yun Hye Hwang (National University of Singapore) X Naturalised Gardens
Hear from Yun Hye Hwang, Associate Professor and Programme Director (BLA). The landscape architect at National University of Singapore (NUS) explores the public’s comfort level for wildness in urban green spaces and creating an accessible way to experience them.

Salad Dressing X Enabling Village
Let Goh Yu Han, Director of Salad Dressing, the landscape design studio behind Enabling Village, share her garden dreams and how rewilding can take place at all levels including “rewilding the sky”.

Learn more about the design potential of the flora around us in Singapore by watching the recording of Garden Dreaming’s accompanying workshop – This Humid House: Appropriating Nature For Pleasure.

Conceptualised and produced by DesignSingapore Council, and presented by the National Design Centre. Exhibition structures by SuperStructure. Visual Identity by Practice Theory. Videography by Plus Collaboratives. Vegetation by Prince’s Landscape.

This event is part of the National Design Centre’s “Casting Hope” programme line-up for April – May 2021.
