How might renewable plant fibres play a role in how we build things?
Explore how fibres from kenaf, a tropical plant that’s widely cultivated in Asia, were processed to create roofing elements in Singapore for the first time.
Uncover the design and fabrication processes of Kenopy, the research project that developed biocomposites from kenaf in this exhibition. Journey through the material explorations and accumulated ‘techne’ behind the project, where progressive iterations and prototyping takes centre stage. This includes interior tiles, transformative tiles, light feature panels and exterior roofing.
By using renewable plant fibres, the project hopes to play a sustainable part in reducing the carbon footprint of the built environment with this alternative material.
For the first time in Singapore, kenaf fibre biocomposites are being used as roofing elements for a sustainable pavilion in Singapore in the form of mesh reinforced skylights and roof eave shingles.
Studio SKLIM has been working with Affordable Abodes to realise Kenopy through shared technical knowledge, agricultural and construction expertise with architectural design thinking.
About Good Design Research
Launched in March 2020 in the middle of a pandemic year, Good Design Research (GDR) underscores the importance of how design backed by deep research can make a true difference by building deep domain knowledge and solving the challenges faced by societies and cities. This initiative empowers designers and design enterprises in Singapore to find their unique value proposition in designing for impact through research and experimentation, supported by a wide network of knowledge partners.

About Studio SKLIM
Studio SKLIM is an award winning design practice crafting bespoke spatial solutions. The studio is based in Singapore and has a presence in India.
The understanding of materials involves both craft and experimentation. The studio believes in playing with materials, understanding their sensitivities and sometimes pushing them beyond their boundaries. They identify local crafts and resources to possibly bring a context to their work, believing in this mutual learning process to produce for the future.
The studio was founded by Kevin Lim, an alumnus of the Architectural Association, London and the National University of Singapore.
