How might renewable plant fibres play a role in how we build things?
Explore how fibres from kenaf, a tropical plant that’s widely cultivated in Asia, were processed to create roofing elements in Singapore for the first time.
Uncover the design and fabrication processes of Kenopy, the research project that developed biocomposites from kenaf in this exhibition. Journey through the material explorations and accumulated ‘techne’ behind the project, where progressive iterations and prototyping takes centre stage. This includes interior tiles, transformative tiles, light feature panels and exterior roofing.
By using renewable plant fibres, the project hopes to play a sustainable part in reducing the carbon footprint of the built environment with this alternative material.
For the first time in Singapore, kenaf fibre biocomposites are being used as roofing elements for a sustainable pavilion in Singapore in the form of mesh reinforced skylights and roof eave shingles.
Studio SKLIM has been working with Affordable Abodes to realise Kenopy through shared technical knowledge, agricultural and construction expertise with architectural design thinking.
