August Events

As Singapore turns 56 years old this month, we’re excited to kick-start a season of celebrating our design luminaries at NDC, starting with an installation titled Rope Chandelier by Theseus Chan and Studio Juju.

Chan is Singapore’s first visual communications designer to be awarded Designer of the Year at the inaugural President*s Design Award (P*DA) 2006 while Studio Juju received Design of the Year at P*DA 2014 for its Rabbit & Tortoise collection, which was hailed for its “poetic elegance” and “design versatility”.

While Rope Chandelier takes centrestage within NDC, our exteriors will also be lit up in national colours. Our hope this National Day month? Let’s keep NDC and our city shining brightly.

Rope Chandelier
Date/Time: 18 Aug – 26 Sep 2021, 9am – 9pm daily
Venue: Atrium, Level 1

An inevitable consequence of a driven culture for far too long, our society’s fixation on success and status quo has discouraged many from individualistic expression. Adopting something not yet done before or popular are deemed as risky ventures. Rope Chandelier celebrates the importance of the process that leads to the undefined domain, exemplifying attributes that characterises an unfinished ‘design’ piece – creating the spirit of experimentation, accidents, failures, and awaking a sense of verve that comes when creating the unknown.

National Vending Gallery: Topic No. 4 Hand Made (EXTENDED!)
Date/Time: 5 Jun – 26 Sep 2021, 9am – 9pm daily
Venue: Design Gallery 2, Level 2

National Vending Gallery presents topic No. 4 Hand Made, a collection of products crafted by makers based in Singapore. Exerting their imagination on the physical material, each piece of work took shape through the hands of the designer. These objects of hand-manship brings back a genuine position to the flagrant use of terms in today’s culture – artisanal, hand-crafted, home-made.
