“Design is really an act of communication, which means having a deep understanding of the person with whom the designer is communicating.”–Donald A. Norman, The Design of Everyday Things

Participatory design evokes emotions and empathy. How might such a process evoke emotions within our communities in Singapore and the South East Asia region? Join Participate in Design and WeCreate Studio as they share their journey of evoking emotions in communities through participatory design in Singapore and the South East Asia Region.

Programme Schedule:

  • Participate in Design – 20 mins
  • WeCreate Studio – 20 mins
  • Q&A + Hands-on Activity – 15 mins

About the Speakers:

  • Larry Yeung, Executive Director, Participate in Design

Larry is a designer and community organizer who is a strong advocate for a participatory and community-centric approach in the design and planning of cities and neighbourhoods. Having previously practiced architectural design and project management in Singapore, he is currently the Executive Director of Participate in Design (P!D), a non-profit design organisation that helps neighbourhoods and public institutions design community-owned spaces and solutions. Since graduating from the Masters of Architecture at the National University of Singapore, Larry’s portfolio of participatory-based works has expanded to include neighbourhood planning, public space design, and community art installations; working in partnership with grassroots organisations, educational institutions, civic groups and government agencies.

  • Ar. Trecia Lim, Founder, Principal Architect, WeCreate Studio

Trecia started WeCreate Studio in 2019, a social consultancy firm that aims to use its architectural and development resources to create social impact by working with local communities directly, especially communities less privileged and with limited resources in Southeast Asia. A registered Architect, Trecia has more than 10 years working in the field of construction with the private and public sector in Singapore and Australia. She has since developed the experience and skillsets in design, project management and development, in delivering complex and large-scale projects. She also currently shares her passion and knowledge in social architecture with students at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, as associate lecturer.

Presented by the DesignSingapore Council in partnership with Participate in Design & WeCreate Studio. Supported by the National Design Centre.

About Participate in Design
Participate in Design (P!D) is a registered non-profit organisation that helps neighbourhoods and public institutions in Singapore design community-owned spaces and solutions.

P!D provides services in designing and facilitating public participation and engagement processes concerning the built environment. We are dedicated to engaging and enabling people in shaping their everyday environments and local communities, founded on the firm belief that everyone has the right to participate in and influence the design and planning processes that affect them.

We research, test and develop socially just and inclusive methods of design that are appropriate for our local neighbourhoods, while also promoting the integration of participatory design in design education and practice.

About WeCreate Studio
WeCreate Studio is an architectural consultancy for the social good. We aim to achieve this through participatory design, working directly with communities and empowering them in the process. We are a registered architectural firm with Board of Architects in Singapore, directing our design and project management capacity towards working with the non-profit sector. The Studio was founded in 2019 with a vision to solve global challenges through community-involved design and development processes. With the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a guide, such as eliminating poverty, improving quality education, providing clean water and sanitation, we aim to develop more sustainable communities.

This event is part of the National Design Centre’s “Emotive Design” programme line-up for March 2021.
