In search of a new frontier, sometimes we have to go back to the beginning. What does this mean for design? Listen to Pan Yi Cheng on what craftsmanship means in the digital era, Voon Wong on designing a spaceport, and Jonathan Yuen on the new language of Singapore identity.
About the Speakers:
- Pan Yi Cheng, Creative Director of Produce.Workshop Pte Ltd (SG)
Yi Cheng has more than a few feathers in his cap. For a start, he is a top honours graduate of the Architectural Association in London and was selected as one of the top 8 graduates in UK in 2006. He was awarded 2nd prize for the 2007 Evolo International Skyscraper Competition and received a special mention for the 2008 LEX Walsall Architectural Competition.
Yi Cheng’s design for Xtra’s Herman Miller Shop and Kki Sweets and the Little Dröm Store, won the best retail building of the year award at the 2012 World Architectural Festival and 2015 INSIDE Festival respectively. His follow-up on the next incarnation of Xtra’s Herman Miller Shop at their new location won the Gold Medal at the 2016 Singapore Interior Designer Awards (SIDA). That same project won the World Interior of the Year as well as best Display Interior at the 2017 INSIDE Festival.
Yi Cheng was recently nominated in the Prodigy Category over in the 2017 INDE.Awards for demonstrating a progressive attitude toward imaginative design practice with regard to skills and services.
- Jonathan Yuen, Founder of Roots (SG)
Born in Malaysia, Jonathan studied communication design and graduated with BA (design) at Curtin University, School of Design. He worked for over a decade in graphic design, digital interactive and advertising fields in Singapore, before founding Roots in 2011.
With disciplined focus on honesty, thoughtfulness in design, and a contemporary visual sensibility, Jonathan’s work has garnered award recognitions in Singapore, Tokyo, Taiwan, Hong Kong and United Kingdom. He has served as one of the executive members in The Design Society Singapore from 2013 to 2015.
Occasionally Jonathan shares his design ethos through lectures and industry talks. He has also served as jury in a number of local and abroad award shows throughout the years.
- Voon Wong, Director of Viewport Studio (UK)
Voon studied at National University of Singapore and the Architectural Association in London, and later worked in the offices of Zaha Hadid, Rick Mather Architects and CF Moller.
In 1997 he set up his own architecture studio in London, Voon Wong Architects, to pursue private projects. In 2001 he started to work on product design with Benson Saw, a graduate from London’s Royal College of Art and went on to be in the selection for the Italian Compasso D’Oro prize. In 2006 the businesses combined to form VW+BS, a multidisciplinary practice working on product design and architecture including the award – winning Upper Class cabins and onboard bars for Virgin Atlantic.
Voon was conferred the Designer of the Year at the President’s Design Award (P*DA) 2012.
The latest iteration of the business is Viewport Studio, with Voon as the creative director of a multidisciplinary agency working on a variety of commercial projects for Delta Air Lines, Easyjet, Wales Millennium Centre as well as interiors for the world’s first spaceport for Virgin Galactic.

- Kelley Cheng, Creative Director/ Founder of The Press Room (SG)
Trained as an architect, Kelley is the Founder and Creative Director of design studio The Press Room, a publishing & design consultancy that designs everything from books, brands, exhibitions, documentaries, and stage and film set design.
An active educator, she has served as adjunct lecturer in Singapore universities and has sat on international judging panels including Red Dot Awards, Nagoya-Do!, Design for Asia Award, Creative Circle Award, and James Dyson Award. Kelley was also recently named Designer of the Year at the President*s Design Award (P*DA) 2020
About Studio SML
Studio SML is a portal that hopes to archive in depth stories of designers and their journeys. The vision is to create a comprehensive archive of mini biographies of all the creatives in Singapore. Categorised by studio size – small (S) for 1-man show to small teams of up to 15 people, medium (M) for 16 – 30 people, and large (L) for teams of above 30 people – the interviews will focus on content, and less on visual. Featuring both upcoming, young designers and established veterans, Studio SML seeks to archive as many stories of designers as possible from Singapore, and subsequently Asia.
