DesignSingapore Scholarship

The DesignSingapore Scholarship was established in 2005. It is for individuals with creativity, drive and passion for design; and who aspire to be leaders in their respective fields of design training – with the ultimate goal to help develop Singapore into Asia's leading hub for design excellence. The scholarship is eligible to students and industry professionals pursuing full-time undergraduate or postgraduate design-related degree in a reputable local or overseas institution.

Who is eligible?
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Singapore citizen or permanent resident
- Completed National Service (for male applicants)
- Have successfully gained admission into a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate design-related course in a reputable local or overseas institution

What are the applicable fields of study?
The design-related degree must be a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate programme at a reputable local or overseas institution. The applicable fields of study are:
- Architecture
- Design Management
- Fashion Design
- Industrial Design
- Interaction Design
- Interior Design
- Landscape Design
- Urban Design
- Visual Communications

What does the scholarship cover?
The DesignSingapore Scholarship covers only tuition fees for the complete course of study. The scholarship does not provide allowance for travel, accommodation and living expenses.

What is the service commitment?
The scholarship recipient will be designated a DesignSingapore Associate. He or she may be assigned DesignSingapore Council projects and initiatives that are developmental in nature.
Local Scholarship

Upon graduation, no service commitment is required

The Associate designation will expire one year upon graduation
Overseas Scholarship

Within five years upon graduation, the individual must fulfil a two-year service commitment in Singapore, in his or her field of training

How do I apply for the DesignSingapore Scholarship?
Step 1
Complete and submit the online application at http://www.cischolarship.sg/dsg.
Online application period: 14 January–5 April, 2013

Step 2
Applicants must submit the portfolio and relevant documents IN PERSON on
Monday, 8 April 2013 or Tuesday, 9 April 2013
9am–12pm and 2pm–5pm at

The following must be submitted:
- Printed copy of the online application form
- Certified true copy of relevant academic records and/or transcripts (including GCE 'O' Level results)
- Copy of letter of admission to institution (with proposed course of study)
- Printed copy of information on proposed course of study
- Printed copy of 1,000-word essay on personal perspective on design
- Printed copy of curriculum vitae and/or record of activities (including participation in exhibitions, competitions, design activities, awards and accomplishments)
- Letters of recommendation from two referees (referees cannot be immediate relatives of the applicant). Referees are requested to enclose the letter of recommendation in an envelope; sign across the envelope seal; then hand the sealed letter to the applicant for submission
- Printed copy of applicant's portfolio and/or samples of applicant's works (development sketches and/or up to five best works)
- Other relevant supporting documents
The portfolio and relevant documents should preferably be bound in A4 or A3 format. All submissions must be labelled securely with the applicant’s name and NRIC number.
All portfolio and relevant documents submitted will be retained by the DesignSingapore Council unless otherwise stated. Please retain a copy of your application for personal reference.

What is the selection process?
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend up to two rounds of selection interviews between April and June. Successful applicants will be informed after all the interviews have been completed. All scholarship recipients must attend a Scholarship Award Ceremony in August.
The DesignSingapore Council reserves the right not to disclose the reasons for approving or rejecting any application; and to reject any incomplete application.
Assessment Criteria
Applicants are assessed on:
- Academic results and track record of co-curricular activities
- Quality of portfolio (originality of concepts; depth of development and exploration of ideas; competency in execution; technical ability; and range of work and skills)
- Achievements, recognition and experience in design
- Potential for creativity and leadership
- Potential (upon graduation) to contribute to Singapore’s design sector
